Responsible for filing and tracking insurance claims for the assigned alpha split. Follow Insurance and Patient Aging for complete resolution of accounts. Account follow up includes resolving disputes with insurance companies for corrected billing. Assist with posting payments and adjustment for the Explanation of Benefits (EOB).

Duties and Responsibilities: 
 
  • Participates in educational activities (webinars, newsletters, on-line training).
  • Prepares daily, monthly and yearly reports as assigned.
  • Submits EDI claims and work clearinghouse rejection reports.
  • Prints, reviews, and mails hard copy claims with appropriate EOB’s.
  • Reviews payment denials and claim rejections; researches and resubmits within established time frames.
  • Reviews and works assigned alpha split aging (Insurance and Patient).
  • Updates account information when required.
  • Initiates telephone calls to insurance companies and patients to obtain reimbursement.
  • Writes appeal letters to insurance companies and track to ensure claim advances to highest level.
  • Documents transactions to maintain adequate audit trail.
  • Processes electronic patient statements.
  • Resolves misdirected payments and identifies adjustments
  • Follows organizational policy regarding collection procedures for delinquent accounts. 
  • Identifies patient financial status for payment arrangement and/or charitable allowance program.
  • Accesses Credit Bureau information for skip trace and credit reports.
  • Submits accounts to collection agency upon approval from Business Office Manager and Physician.
  • Prints weekly collection letters and sends collection/bad debt email to physicians
  • Processes past due and final collection letters within the recommended time frame.
  • Responsible for researching mail returns for current patient demographics.
  • Occasional court appearance as organizational representative as requested by outside collection agency.
  • Interface with patients, family and healthcare professionals.
  • Update accounts upon receipts of bankruptcy notice and follows company policy.
  • Post payments, adjustments and notes from Explanation of Benefits (includes electronic remittance).
  • Apply Quick Notes for message to print on patient statement.
  • Reconcile posted batches with control sheet.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:
  • Two years of experience in medical billing office with emphasis on insurance research and claim follow-up
  • Preferred: Some college or continuing education preferred.
  • Minimum: High School diploma 
  • Certificate/License: Certified Professional Biller (CPB) or Certified Coder (CPC) required from AAPC.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationships with advanced verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Skill in gathering, analyzing and interpreting information. 
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook and 10 key by touch. 
  • Ability to maintain strictest confidentiality of financial and personal matters 
  • Ability to read, write and speak English. 
  • Ability to sort and file materials correctly by alphabetic or numeric systems.
